What is Tarot?

Tarot is a deck of cards, used from at least the mid-15th century in various parts of Europe to play card games such as Tarocchini. It is now primarily for fortune-telling, self-reflection, and divination. A standard tarot deck consists of 78 cards, divided into 22 Major Arcana and 56 Minor Arcana cards organized into four suits, similar to playing cards. Tarot readers interpret the arrangement and symbolism of the cards to gain insight into the past, present, or future, often to guide personal growth and decision-making.

A spread of tarot cards on a round wooden surface, including Knight of Wands, Eight of Cups, Six of Swords, and Ace of Pentacles, with crystals, a black book, and decorative items surrounding it.
Tarot card labeled "The Star" showing a nude woman pouring water from two containers into a pond, with seven stars surrounding her and mountains in the background.
Tarot card depicting The Chariot, featuring a regal figure in armor sitting in a chariot, flanked by a black and a white sphinx, with cityscape in the background.
Tarot card titled "The Fool" showing a person walking on a path with a small dog, holding a bag over their shoulder, with the sun shining overhead.

The World of Trionfi Explained

The name was inspired by the fact the Trionfi were the allegorical trump cards added to the standard four-suited Italian playing card packs in the 15th century to create the first Tarot decks. Trionfi is the world in which everyone in TAROC: A Fool’s Journey lives in.

Marble statue of Nike, the Greek goddess of victory, with wings, draped clothing, and missing head, displayed indoors.

In Trionfi, the 22 Major Arcana are Gods. Some live in the Over World, some live in the Under World, but no one truly knows where they live, which ones to trust, or when they’ll appear.

The Minor Arcana gets split into different houses.

A Fool’s Journey focuses on the House of Fire

Within each suit, there are numbered cards and face cards. From Ace to 10, those are the different realms within the House (e.g. the Fourth Realm in the House of Fire would represent the Four of Wands) with the Ace being the capital of said House.

The face cards—Page, Knight, Queen, and King—are the real people, with the Queen and King being the rulers of the House.

Each Realm and each person embodies the characteristics and meaning that the original Tarot card represents—same goes with the Major Arcana.
